Manila – The anti-graft court Sandiganbayan has ordered the arrest of Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Imelda Marcos after convicting her of seven counts of graft related to private organizations that were created in Switzerland during her time in office.
The 5th Division Clerk of Court, during the reading of the verdict on Friday, stated that the court “finds the accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt..." over seven counts of graft during her time as a government official from 1968 to 1986.
The former first lady was not present during the promulgation of the decision, including her legal counsel, as the 89-year-old lawmaker is sentenced to prison for six years up to 11 years for each of the case. She is also disqualified to hold any public office ever again.
5th Division Chairman Associate Justice Rafael Lagos ordered the issuance of a warrant of arrest against Marcos, but also clarified that she can have temporary freedom if she post bail while filing a motion for reconsideration.
According to the court, the estimated amount of public money used involved in these private organizations by Marcos is around $200 million.
